You will have probably heard about the infamous Fyre Festival in the past week or so. Many, many things went wrong at the festival that was advertised as a luxury, boutique festival like no other.
What is Fyre Festival?
Fyre Festival was advertised as a three-day party on an island in the Bahamas. Organised by Ja Rule and Billy McFarland, the luxury event had tickets for the weekend costing between $450 and $250,000.
So, let’s run through just some of the things that went wrong:
- Bands such as Blink 182 pulled out just days before the event
- Long flight delays
- Luggage left outside shipping containers at night
- The luxury accommodation turned out to be disaster relief tents
- The tropical seas around the island were shark-infested
After the sewage facilities broke, organisers finally decided it was probably best to cancel the festival, leaving most attendees stranded.
Catering problems
The problems didn’t stop there. An area that we looked at and thought ‘we could do better than that’ was the catering.
Guests were told that the festival weekend would commence with a beachside barbecue complete with a stunning sunset, a Bahamian menu and Champagne toast. Sounds beautiful! Well, this gourmet selection of food was, in fact, a deconstructed cheese sandwich.

So, who provided this culinary masterpiece? It turns out that the arranged caterers withdrew a month before the festival start date. This was after realising that there were significant business issues that could not be resolved and which would not allow them to deliver a premium food and beverage experience.
It remains a mystery as to who was behind the cheese sandwich fiasco.
